Crack Injection vs. Full Interior French Drain System: When to Choose One, Both, or More

Coming downstairs and finding water in your basement would throw any homeowner for a loop. A million questions run through your mind, like: how do I fix this? Do I need a new drainage system? How is the water getting in? You may have heard of different waterproofing solutions, like crack injection or drainage systems, but how do you know which one you need?

Choosing the wrong one, or only one when you may need both, has caused homeowners more headaches and money. That’s why seeking a professional inspection can help make sure you’re getting the best repairs for your home and avoid future problems from happening.

What is Crack Injection?

Polyurethane crack injection is used on most basement wall cracks. Technicians inject expanding resin under high pressure so it travels all the way through the thick, concrete foundation wall, completely filling the crack (from the exterior all the way to the interior). This method is best for:

  • Poured concrete foundation walls
  • One or a few visible vertical or diagonal cracks
  • Leaking cracks
  • Cracks less than ¼ inch wide
  • Efflorescence (white mineral deposits) tracing down from the crack
  • Failed DIY crack repairs

Crack injection works best when it’s caught early, before the cracks have grown too wide or the walls have started bowing or tilting. It’s also a more affordable method than installing a full drainage system. But this isn’t an appropriate solution for every situation. For example, it does not address water coming in through the floor-wall joint or water rising up through the slab. That’s where a full interior French drain system shines.

What is a Full Interior French Drain System?

An interior French drain system manages hydrostatic pressure, which is the force of groundwater pushing against and under the foundation. It catches any water that would otherwise enter at the cove joint where the wall meets the floor or rises through the slab.

At StayDry®, we use the HydroFlow French drain system. We cut a trench into the floor and install a perforated pipe and filtration stone; the system directs any water that reaches the foundation into a sump pump basin. The pump then discharges the water safely away from the house. A French drain system is best for:

  • Chronic dampness or musty odor with no obvious entry point
  • Water coming up through the floor or multiple floor cracks
  • Water seeping along the basement walls around the perimeter

A French drain system does what crack injection can’t, but the opposite is also true. A drain system does not seal active cracks that are higher up on the wall. The floor will stay dry, but water can still enter through the cracks and create stains, efflorescence, or mold.

Quick Comparison: Crack Injection vs. Full Interior French Drain System

Factor Polyurethane Crack Injection Full Interior French Drain System
Main Purpose Seals specific cracks all the way through the foundation wall Manages hydrostatic pressure and redirects water at the floor-wall joint
Best For Localized leaks, vertical/diagonal cracks less than ¼ in wide Widespread seepage along perimeter of the floor
Typical Signs Water appears in the same spot, efflorescence traces from crack Water along base of multiple walls, floor gets wet, no obvious entry points
What Does it Not Fix Floor seepage, cove-joint water, or hydrostatic pressure Active cracks higher up on the wall
Disruption Level Low, usually a few hours, minimal mess Moderate, involves cutting a trench along the perimeter
Cost Lower, typically $475-$1,200/crack Higher, typically $3,500-$8,500 (full system investment)
When It’s Enough Alone Problem is clearly limited to one or a few cracks No active wall cracks, just perimeter/floor water
Often Combined With French drain when both issues exist Crack injection for any active wall cracks

Crack Injection vs. Full Interior French Drain System: Which to Choose?

When our technicians inspect a property to determine the appropriate solution, they are looking for several factors. Crack injection is the best solution when the problem is clearly localized:

  • You can point to exactly where the water is entering
  • The rest of the basement is dry
  • There’s no seepage at the floor-wall joint
  • Your foundation is, otherwise, stable

A French drain system if you have:

  • Water along the perimeter of multiple walls
  • Your floor gets wet after spring thaw or heavy rainfall
  • You’ve already sealed any visible cracks
  • If you want better protection against hydrostatic pressure

If you’re experiencing all of these signs, your home may need both solutions to fully protect it. Doing only one repair will only solve part of the problem. An experienced waterproofing company, like StayDry®, can assess your situation and choose the best solutions, rather than defaulting to the same solution for every home.
